HOME DEMOLITION

“Home demolition” refers to the act of tearing down a home. A home may be demolished with no intention of saving any part of it, or it may be more carefully demolished with the intention of salvaging parts of it. These parts may then be resold or donated to organizations like Habitat for Humanity. This particular kind of demolition is referred to as “deconstruction.”

WHY DEMOLISH?

There are a few reasons why someone might consider demolishing a home. These can include:

  • Age

  • Availability of untouched land
  • Infestation
  • Health and safety

WHAT’S INVOLVED IN HOME DEMOLITION?

Home demolition is generally straight-forward, but someone who has never been through the process may find it a bit intimidating. While the act of demolition is easy enough, there are a few things that need to be done before the specialist even swings a sledgehammer.

Assuming you have already chosen a demolition company, you will still need to work with them to:

  • DECIDE ON THE METHOD
Since there is more than one way to take down a house, you will need to consult with a professional to determine the best way to handle the project.
  • INSPECTION
The demolition contractor should be able to tell you what the inspection requirements are where you live. Many places have regulations surrounding the safe removal of asbestos, mould, lead paint or other potentially hazardous materials.
  • PERMITS
You can get demolition permits from your local city hall. You will also need to know if your municipal government has rules about noise levels, work hours or safe disposal.
  • DISCONNECT
You will need to disconnect your electricity, water, sewage and gas. All of these pose a potential risk to the safety of the workers, as well as possibly leading to outages in the community.
  • SAFETY
You will need to make sure the area is safe, by putting temporary fencing up. Reputable demolition companies will do this as part of their service.
  • SALVAGE
Your home probably has salvageable materials in it. You can choose to remove and resell or donate these materials. There are also many charitable organizations that will do the salvage work for you.

  • TEAR IT DOWN
Demolition can take anywhere from one day to several, depending on the method being used.
  • CLEAN UP
After the demolition, your property will need to be cleaned up, including removing the foundation.
